1950s: Like most kids finding their musical feet, he was heavily influenced by American pop and rock’n’roll.
1956: Began work as an electrical apprentice in the city. Formed the Hepparays with Bruce Gurr, Tony Caperero, Owen Smith and Dave Taylor.
1959: Won a talent quest at the Allawah Hotel on June 24. Part of the prize was a Festival Records contract and the band first recorded as the Hepparays – Christmas Rock Medley/I Remember Christmas At Home. To create a new image, he decided on a name change to Les Starr. A new guitar in the shape of a star was made. Les Starr and the Hepparays eventually became Lucky Starr and the Hepparays. The band recorded four more singles with Festival – Somebody Touched Me/When You Come Back To Me.
1960: Three more singles were released on Festival – Bill Bailey Won’t You Please Come Home/Wrong, The Big Hurt/Way Down Yonder in New Orleans and Yeah – That’s How/Sweet Georgia Brown. The group disbanded.
1962: Lucky heard Geoff Mack sing I’ve Been Everywhere in a small nightclub, the Afro-Cuban in Kings Cross, and asked if he could record it. He had two weeks to learn the words before hitting the studio, and still needed a lyric sheet when it came time to put down the track. The song went straight to #1 on the Australian music charts and stayed at the top for 15 weeks. Dot Records in America requested a US version of the song, which Geoff Mack wrote, and Lucky recorded, releasing a four-track EP with the versions of the song written for NZ and UK markets. It was sent to America and Hank Snow covered the US version, making it a #1 hit in the States. A full album, I’ve Been Everywhere was released on Festival.
1963: Dot Records released a single for Lucky in the States – Poor Little Jimmy Brown/Blistered. On the strength of the single, he was hugely popular in Las Vegas.
1965: Lucky was the first Australian artist to tour Vietnam.
1970s: Became a cabaret act, touring the Hilton circuit overseas.
1975: His first trucking album, Big Wheels went gold and won the ARIA award for Country Album of the Year.
1976: Released Wheels, another trucking album on RCA and an album with Nev Nicholls – Lucky Starr Radio Show/Nev Nicholls Radio Show on RCA.
1977: Released the album Old Friends on RCA.
1978: Released the album Mr Truck Driver on RCA.
1980: Inducted into the Hands of Fame, Tamworth.
2002-03: Toured extensively with fellow rock stars on Long Way To The Top.
2008: Inducted into the Hall of Fame at the MO Awards.
2011: Released the album Son of a Gun with son Craig Morrison and headlined their own show of the same name in Tamworth during the CMF at Wests.
2021: Still working, still having fun, still trying to avoid the virus and enjoying his OBE status.
